Research In Economic Anthropology

Research in Economic Anthropology (REA), founded in 1978, is the longest-running published series in Economic Anthropology. It aims to advance the comparative study of economic systems in their broader socio-cultural context.

The first editor of REA was George Dalton, who produced volumes 1-5. Next, Barry Isaac edited volumes 6-20. Isaac did much to equalize the balance between ethnographic and archaeological research in the pages of REA, and he also produced a number of supplements to the series. With volume 20, REA shifted from publication under JAI Press to Elsevier Science, and editorship was handed over to Norbert Dannhaeuser and Cynthia Werner of Texas A&M University, who were responsible for volumes 21-24. Donald Wood of Akita University, Japan, assumed the editorship in 2005, and the series once again changed homes in early 2008 when it was transferred by Elsevier to Emerald Publishing, in the United Kingdom.

Volumes 20-28 are available through the Emerald Bookstore or Amazon.com or other booksellers. As of January 2009, volumes 21-28 are still available for download on Elsevier's Science Direct for those who have access.

Original empirical and theoretical works are desired for this refereed series, as well as contributions that review recent developments in particular sub-fields of economic anthropology. Each volume of REA contains approximately 10-15 chapters by different authors.

The Economics of Religion: Anthropological Appraisals (a volume in the Research in Economic Anthropology series).

The editors aim at expanding anthropological theories beyond the classical relationships between economy and religion to embrace new perspectives on religious behaviour from an economics point-of-view, and at appraising the relevance of the economics of religion.

Therefore, preferred topics include: Economic Theories of Religion, including:

  • Market Theory
  • Rational Choice Theory
  • Game Theory
  • Religious Consumerism
  • Symbolic Economy
  • Religious Ritual Economy

Also welcome, however, are more classical topics such as religious economies & the influence of economics on:

  • Beliefs
  • Practices
  • Rituals
  • Organisations
  • Diffusions

Any previously unpublished manuscript that is economic, anthropological, and religious-oriented may be considered, but papers that (1) utilize original data obtained through empirical ethnographic research methods, and (2) in some way engage the general economic anthropology literature, will be especially welcome. The editors will seek an overall balance for the volume in geographical and topical focus.

Ideally, papers should not exceed 10,000 words (excluding notes and references). They should also be double-spaced, and all tables, figures, photographs, or other images must be of publishable quality and clear for publication regarding copyright laws. Authors need to include an abstract of about 100 words. Notes are to be arranged as endnotes, preceding references. Electronic submissions are preferred. Please use MS Word.Either UK spelling or USA spelling will be acceptable.
